A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a VPN server. A proxy is an intermediary that forwards requests for software configured to use it. Either can be useful, but their coverage and setup differ.
| Feature | VPN | Proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Typically device IP traffic, subject to routing settings. | Traffic configured to use it, through app or system settings. |
| Exit address | Routed connections appear from the VPN exit. | Proxied requests appear from the proxy exit. |
| Encryption | Encrypts traffic between the device and VPN server. | Depends on the proxy protocol and use of HTTPS. |
| Browser profiles | A connection does not assign separate exits to each profile. | Separate proxy settings may be possible for each profile. |
Device coverage depends on routing
A typical full-tunnel VPN routes your device's IP traffic through its server. Split tunneling and route exclusions can leave some traffic outside that tunnel. A proxy only handles traffic sent to it: that might be one app, one browser profile, or apps following system proxy settings. Check the actual configuration before assuming everything is covered.
Encryption also has boundaries. A VPN tunnel ends at the VPN server; HTTPS protects the connection to the website. Proxies are not all unencrypted, and neither tool makes you anonymous. Accounts, cookies and browser characteristics can still identify you.
Separate profiles do not mean separate IPs
Browser profiles separate local data such as cookies and saved logins. They do not, by themselves, create different network exits. With one VPN connection, profiles usually share that connection's exit address. If you need separate proxy endpoints, check that the service and each browser profile support that setup.
Where EthicalVPN fits
EthicalVPN is a system-wide VPN for Windows, macOS and Linux, with locations in Frankfurt, Paris, London and Newark. It does not provide per-profile HTTP or SOCKS proxy endpoints. No account or subscription is required.
Free access requires your explicit consent to proxy sharing. Third-party traffic can use your bandwidth, device resources and public IP address. Sharing can continue through a background service after you close the app window. Withdrawing consent stops sharing and free VPN access. Read the exchange before deciding whether it suits your connection.
